Over the years I've had people tell me that I just got lucky. I've also had people tell me that they are not lucky when it comes to MLM.I actually do not believe there is luck involved when it comes to your own network marketing business.To start, I believe you need to choose a company that fits you. If you are not a cook, then don't join a company that sells kitchen products. If you are not a craft person, then don't join a company that sells rubber stamps or scrapbook supplies. Choose a company that sells products you'll use. When you walk into my house, it's easy to know what I sell. I have products all over my house and use them regularly. I very recently had someone approach me about joining a jewelry company. She went on and on about what a great opportunity this was. I don't wear jewelry. Not only am I not looking for another company to join, I also don't wear jewelry. This is not a match for me.Next, I believe you need to have a desire to build a business. It doesn't matter if you're opening a new pizza place or if you've joined an MLM company, you need to have a desire to make this work and make this grow. It's not about luck, it's about desire to make it happen. Not everyone has this desire. Over the years, I've met many people who said "it didn't work" when speaking about an MLM opportunity they "tried." They told me they work full time and they have a few kids. They also could tell me every episode of their favorite t.v. show. This person did not have a desire to build a business. As I said, not everyone does.You have to have a marketing plan or marketing strategy. People will not bang down your door to buy your products or join your team. You need to put yourself and your products out there. People need to know you exist. I have blogs, belong to online communities, chat on social media networks, have signs on my car, hold local fundraisers and just in general make it a point to let everyone know what I do. I am contacted regularly with people saying, "I saw your ad", or "I'm the one you spoke to in the community." People find me because I put my name and my products out there on a regular basis.Finally, I believe you need to constantly take steps to learn and grow. When I started in MLM, the internet didn't even exist. Yes, I'm aging myself here. I went door to door almost daily and I placed ads in newspapers and magazines across the country. Once the internet became another way to market, I wanted to learn all that I could learn. I read books, took classes and subscribed to blogs and newsletters. Life changes and new ideas are introduced. I've read entire books on the best ways to send emails. I've read entire books on how to answer your telephone and the message you're giving others when you answer. A mentor once told me that I needed to invest at least ten minutes each and every day reading something that would benefit my business. He told me that anyone could find a spare ten minutes per day. Doing this each and every day would give me three hundred minutes or four hours per month of new knowledge. What I used to do when I first learned this trick was to find a book and read for ten minutes each day. I'd then write up some kind of forum post or training for my team based on those ten minutes of learning. I even surprised myself at how much could be learned in just ten minutes per day.Succeeding in MLM really is not about "luck." It's about desire and choices.

Now, this reminds me of the chicken and the egg and which comes first. It can be answered in many ways, depending on your perspective. Now, first of all, let me say the answer is definitely depends. This is wasting money on the lottery ticket mentality people and will be so tired of hearing the next business plan that they run with their tails between their legs.Now, if you truly want to hit profitability faster, you must learn how to market. Their are many people that have built businesses. Now, they will teach you to find other people that will start a business with you. Many companies have lost the true focus. That is to move product for the company. Most companies pay more for customer purchases. What you can do is get customers hooked and a happy customer is more open to building a business so that they can get the products they want at a reduced cost. This is where I tell people, if you are buying products you do not have a need for, and you are buying lots of product every month, you have a larger chance that you will never be profitable. Remember, you do get business credits from the government, so make sure you get with your accountant. Also, education is something you can deduct, so make sure you invest in yourself. The government can not take that back from you!

I was having a conversation with a friend, Mark, a few months back, about home based businesses. He asked, "are there any that is really as good as they are advertised?" And I told him that there was only one real good company out there and yes, many companies love to get passionate about the incomes and get you hooked based upon that and only one will help him make the money he wants.Mark was very interested in what I had to say. I then said to Mark, "what is it that you are most passionate about?" I asked him if he could list things that were important to him and where he had needs in his life. He said, "Well, I am behind on my bills and I just want a company that can make me money." I said, "That is great", because many of the companies can help him make money. He said "Scott, I want to have the company to make the most money." I said "Yes, I know the exact one." But besides money, if I talked to his wife and a best friend of his, what would they tell me you really wanted or needed? He looked at me and he said that his best friend would tell me he needed a vacation because he was very stressed. He laughed about it and said he would think that it was so that his friend and him could get away and go golfing. He said his wife would probably tell me that it would be about his health. He was recently prescribed with high blood pressure medicine and he said he could lose a few pounds. He said he would have less stress and it may help his blood pressure if he just had more money. I asked him, if he had more money, what would that ultimately give him? He said he could get into the gym, and maybe take a vacation. His blood pressure may become lower and would expect to lose weight.Now, by this time in our conversation, his friend Mary came up to us and after some small talk Mary had asked Mark how he knew me. He told her that I taught network marketers how to build businesses, and he was getting the scoop from me about the best business. Mary said she wanted to know about it too. Mary was in great shape and had a baby boy 5 years old. She said she was recently divorced and needed to find a job since her only income walked out the door and now she had to care for her little one. I asked Mary what she liked to do, and she said she loved peace and meditation times. I said awesome, the best company could help her. Now at this point, Mark said well he wants to get into that company. Mark said that maybe Mary and he could work together in the perfect company.At this point, I told Mark that the perfect company that Mary would be in would not be the one for him. He was confused. I told him that they were very different, and had different wants and needs. I told him the perfect company for him was not the perfect company for Mary. I said if I recommended to him the company for Mary, he would be unhappy and felt I misled him, and Mary would think the same.I told them both, the perfect company for you should not be based upon what someone tells you that you can make with the company. I said it needs to match up with your needs, wants and desires and things that bring you a lot of passion. For Mark, it was more wrapped around health related issues, where Mary wanted products that could give her peace. I gave them a list of companies each, and I said, find someone who can get you the products and try them out for 2 months. Then, if you like them and really if you love the product and the results, then that would be the perfect company for them. If the products did not meet expectations, for them to start with the company, would be like fitting someone in a size 10 shoe into a size 5.I am happy to report that both Mary and Mark have their own home business and I work with them to build their businesses and they are very successful. Both say their business is the perfect business. But it was because it was meant for them. It is not the company that made it the perfect business for the income side, it is because of what they have done.
